A few years ago, Equilibrium implemented the project “Early Childhood Education Reform in Eastern Europe – Bulgaria” in partnership with VIA University College, Faculty of Education and Social Studies, Denmark.

The project involved numerous activities, including training for teaching and non-teaching staff at kindergartens, with “Brothers Grimm” Kindergarten in Sofia serving as our main partner. Through our joint efforts, we almost completely transformed the spaces inside the kindergarten so that they encourage the children to engage in free play and development, foster creativity, or simply allow them to relax when they need to.

But the biggest change took place in the kindergarten playground, where, together with LATT – Landscape & Architecture, we created a completely new type of playground featuring small hills and wooden structures that offer unlimited opportunities for imagination, adventurous play, and the social, cognitive, and motor development of young children.

These changes were inspired by Danish pedagogy and the environment created in Denmark for children at the earliest ages.

The playground opened in October 2022, and Petya Yosifova—director of the “Brothers Grimm” Preschool—received the well-deserved “Temple of Play” award from “Equilibrium.”

In a short time, this playground model began to become the preferred choice for many other kindergartens across the country—both in small towns and in large cities. This is what the team from the company that built the first such playground under the “Equilibrium” project shared with us.

We are extremely happy that we have created a model that is so fun, safe, close to nature, and attuned to children’s natural impulses to play and develop.
