The Parents’ Self-Help Group formed 1 year ago at the Daycare Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities, managed by Equilibrium, is now gaining strength.
We have always been very keen to create a takaav for parents of children with disabilities attending the services at the Day Centre “Sunny”, because parent groups are a place for sharing, questions, discussions, meetings with specialists, exchange of experience and useful information and most of all for mutual help. During the meetings, sensitivity and courtesy are maintained, different points of view are respected and above all, a space is created for parents to share their difficulties, challenges and successes with their children.
Group meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month.
Topics are suggested by parents on the basis of a survey. Some of the topics are also suggested by the specialists working with the children in the Daycare Centre, who can accurately identify problem areas and need for additional meetings and discussions with the parents. Topics such as: Electronic devices – how they affect children’s brain development; Problem child behaviour – possible causes and possible solutions; Information and support for parents of children with SEN (Special Educational Needs); The place in mainstream school of children with SEN; Different types of SEN and ways of supporting children with SEN in mainstream schools; Play and the child – why play is important and how it helps children’s development; Allergies – types of allergies and allergens; Augmentative and alternative communication – or how technology is changing lives and many other topics of interest to parents and professionals with a focus on children.
We are grateful for the trust and support of parents in making this group happen!
