In 2014 we celebrate 10 years since the organisation was founded: 10 years of inspiration, perseverance, and achievement.

Our jubilee brochure can be viewed here page 1 and page 2

Equilibrium (EQ) is headquartered in Bulgaria. EQ specializes in working with unfortunate children that most adults find difficult to handle. Many are educationally and socially disadvantaged because of early life experience that may have included abuse, separation from parents, institutionalization, bereavement, prolonged deprivation or an especially traumatic event.

We provide mentoring. This helps children become self-aware and resilient – capable of understanding that some experiences are negative or unhappy, not life, not existence.

We provide educational rehabilitation. This enables children to maximize their potential within a formal schooling system to which they are not well attuned.

Our techniques are pioneering.

We participate actively in the process of deinstitutionalization of the care for children in Bulgaria. In 2010 together with our partners from the British Organization ‘Hope and Homes for Children’ we closed the first institution for children from 0 to 3 years-of-age in the town of Teteven.

Equilibrium actively supports the deinstitutionalisation in Ruse district and shares experience with other municipalities, district administrations, NGOs and social services providers. The organisation is invited to take part in working groups for changing the normative base and making it conductive to the process of transition from institutional to family and community based care.

Equilibrium is one of the founding members of Coalition ‘Childhood 2025’ (February 2013) – an informal network of NGOs and experts as a guarantor for the continuation and sustainability of the process of DI in Bulgaria. In July 2013 Equilibrium joined the pan-European campaign of Eurochild and Hope and Homes for Children – ‘Opening doors for Europe’s children. Strengthening families. Ending institutional care’. (http://www.openingdoors.eu/) aimed at EU institutions and national governments to prioritise the use EU funds for eradicating institutional care, preventing separating children from their families and developing alternative family and community based care and services.

EQ is a member of The National Network for Children /NNC/.

‘It is important that students bring a certain ragamuffin, barefoot irreverence to their studies; they are not here to worship what is known, but to question it.’
